Well its about time I wrote about my experiences with www.pbxnsip.com as a software based PBX and www.inphonex.com as an online SIP provider.

First off, I can't say enough about the support from pbxnsip so far! I was new to the VoIP world when I started investigating options for my lab environment where I wanted to build out something more than an IM and web conferencing solution. After working through many of the issues with my OCS Edge servers, I finally had an environment I could prove out all my scenarios and began looking for a software PBX.

Somewhere along the way I found a post about pbxnsip and their work with Microsoft Office Communications Server. I quickly checked the compatibility guide for IP-PBX's and noticed they were already listed on the Exchange 2007 UM site: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/library/cc164342.aspx#supIPPBX

So this was good news!

Even though they're not on the tekVizion list of certified PBX's for OCS --yet, this was a viable option. Thanks as well to their wiki page on the subject: http://wiki.pbxnsip.com/index.php/Office_Communications_Server.

So this is what I needed to get all the software bits in place, now it was time to find a SIP trunk provider. I asked around and did some digging online and found www.inphonex.com which I think is based in Miami, FL, USA. They were able to provide me a DID based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and their rates were decent. So far I've been happy with their service even though the odd time I call my DID I get a busy signal....but not to bad for a lab environment.

For those of you who are looking for an alternative to www.inphonex.com, check out www.voiphiway.ca as they seem to have slightly better prices and have a more "trusting" web presence.

What is TLS?

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a protocol that is used for establishing a secure connection between a client and a server. In this case the client is your phone and the server is the PBX.

What is a Log level?

Information displayed under Log level 9 is everything that is going on with the server. Log level 0 will only report important trace. Log Level 9 should only be switched on whilst you capture the trace, on a busy system this could slow things down.

What is Loopback Protection?

With SIP, the number you call is actually sent with the domain information included (just like email). Sometimes this can cause the call to come back into the domain and therefore create a loop. Loops can come round many hundreds of time in 1 second.

What is an SBC?

Session Border Controller (SBC) is a device or application that governs the manner in which calls, also called sessions, are initiated, conducted and terminated in a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) network.

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a signaling protocol that is used by technology products for creating session-oriented connections between two or more endpoints in an IP network

These endpoints could be IP telephones, instant messaging clients, or a collaborative multimedia conference application.

The core protocol itself is defined within the IETF SIP working group. Additional work is done in the IETF SIPPING working group, which is chartered to document the use of SIP for several applications related to telephony and multimedia, and to develop requirements for extensions to SIP needed for those applications.

Small offices have different requirements
In the past, small offices were not blessed with reasonable VoIP solutions. Now that has changed.

What is a SIP trunk?
A SIP trunk is a way to get external calls in and out of an IP PBX. All extensions and accounts are internal, at some point someone will want to talk to other telephone users outside the PBX. This is done by using a trunk from the PBX to the telephone network.

What is the PSTN?
The PSTN is the Public Switch Telephone Network, a term for the telephone network as we have used for many years.

What is a Media Gateway?
A media gateway is a device that sits between the PBX and the PSTN network. pbxnsip communicates with the media gateway using a Trunk.

What is NAT?
Network Address translation (NAT) is the translation of an Internet Protocol address (IP address) between networks. One network is designated the inside network and the other is the outside. Typically, a company maps its local inside network address to a global outside (public) IP addresses. NAT unmaps the global IP addresses on incoming packets back into local IP addresses. This helps ensure security. It can also cause severe headaches without a NAT filter or session border controller.

Some IP PBX manufacturers can do End-to-End Security using SIPS/SRTP. Those who do will survive in the VoIP and IP PBX market.

Why should you expose yourself to threats. Threats from the inside are just as bad as people tapping your line. A disgruntled employee who tapps the bosses phone will make a huge headache when they start to use the information.

A really good combination is the Polycom or Snom IP Phones mixed togther pbxnsip.

The great thing about the Polycom or Snom IP Phones is that they can be automatcially be provisioned directly from pbxnsip

Another great feature of pbxnsip is the DOS protection system and Session Border Controller (SBC) which comes as standard.
